Hatter to Undergo Major Revamp

The Hatter Institute will shortly undergo a major revamp of our laboratories and office space.  During the planned 10 week renovation we will be moving to temporary offices on the 5th floor and we will be available between 9.00 am and 12.00 noon daily.  Due to serious health and safety issues related to a very old and defective air-conditioning system interlinking several floors of the Chris Barnard Building, which has led to allergies and other health issues experienced over the past years, a major revamp of our facilities will commence at the end of August.

We plan to use this opportunity to implement a major upgrade of the basic science research facilities. While it is possible to do relevant public health research on a shoestring and good clinical research on a modest budget, modern and safe facilities are required for competitive basic research.

As highlighted by the Minister of Science and Technology at a National Science and Technology function in June this year, research and technology go hand in hand with the economic development of a country. We would like to contribute to that even more!

Modernized facilities with better equipment would substantially improve our ability to train doctors and basic scientists in research, as well as further improve our research The Institute also serves as a biobank for plasma and genetic samples not only from South Africa, but also other African countries.

We are very much looking forward to moving into our brand new state-of-the-art HICRA at the end of November!!
